Microsoft End Of Support Expirations in 2010

Microsoft has several upcoming End of Support dates that all users of Microsoft Windows should know about.  End of Support means that Microsoft will no longer create updates or hot fixes to address issues with the products.  The most important point to this is that Microsoft no longer patch security issues for these products that are out of support.

All versions of Windows 2000 will go out of support on July 13, 2010.  The only way to address this is to upgrade to a newer version of Windows.  Please consult your IT provider on options to replace any Windows 2000 systems as soon as possible to limit your exposure.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 will go out of support on July 13, 2010.  This can be addressed by upgrading to the latest service pack from Microsoft.  It is recommended that all users of Windows XP apply Service Pack 3.

Windows Vista with no service pack (RTM) will go out of support on April 13, 2010.  This can be addressed by upgrading to the latest service pack from Microsoft.  It is recommended that all users of Windows Vista apply Service Pack 2.

Important Year End Information for Sage Timberline Office

Sage Timberline Office

We still have a few more weeks of summer left, so it seems odd to be thinking about year-end already!  Despite the fact that it’s almost 90 degrees outside and school is still out, Sage is planning ahead and has released an official communication with their plans for the 2009 year-end release.  This information comes along with the announcement of the newest release of Sage Timberline office (version 9.6 update 5), which will be available for download next week.  This newest release for 9.6 includes many new features, which you can read about here

For 2009, the year-end update will be compatible with the following versions:

  • 9.4.1
  • 9.5.0 and 9.5.0 Rev 1
  • 9.6.0 and 9.6.0 Rev 1

If you are on a version earlier than 9.4.1 and use Timberline for year-end government reporting, it is recommended that you upgrade to version 9.6 before December.

One more thing to consider, beginning in 2010, Sage Timberline Office Accounting and Estimating products will be distributed in DVD format only (although, some updates may still be available by download).  Document Management and some peripheral products will still be distributed on CDs.  You should discuss this with your IT professional to determine if your system is capable of accommodating this media change.

MIS Group Ceases Operations

According to an MIS Group press release posted on their website, the top Sage Partner for 2007-2008 has ceased all business operations.  On many websites and blogs there has been speculation and gross distortion involving the news of this Dallas-based VAR.  Although the economy was a factor in MIS’s closure, their strategy of growth through leveraged acqusition of seven companies was the primary cause – a difficult task even in a growth economy.  Sage is taking a very proactive approach in making sure their customers are supported during the transition period and, most likely, will ask the original owners of business partners to support those customers.

CIS Consulting Group has also been affected by the economy, however, we remain unleveraged and in strong financial position.  Like most businesses, we had to let loyal employees go and reduce overhead so that we could operate profitably in a more challenging environment, but we did so from a position of strength so that we can continue giving our customers the best service possible.

CIS has much respect for the principals of MIS and has worked with many of its key employees.  We wish them well in their future endeavors.
